Hands-On: Flash MX 2004 Publishing

Exercise 40.1: Publish Settings in Flash MX 2004

Flash MX 2004 provides many ways that you can publish your movies for others to view. You can publish a movie that will display on a Web page, publish a movie as a Flash MX 2004 movie file or publish a movie as a projector file so a computer that does not have Flash installed can play the movie. Before you publish a movie, you can preview how the movie will appear, print the movie and test the download performance of the movie.

When you publish a Flash MX 2004 movie for display on a Web page, Flash MX 2004 creates the Web page that will display the movie and the Flash Player file that will appear on the Web page.

Follow these simple steps to accomplish this:

  1. Publish Settings Click File > Publish Settings, or [Control] + [Shift] + [F12] and the Publish Settings dialog box will appear.
  2. Click the Formatstab. (Flash should already have a checkmark beside the Flash and HTML formats so you can publish a Flash MX movie).
  3. Click the HTMLtab to specify the settings for the Web page.
  4. You can change the movie size by clicking the movie size option. Some of the choices are to specify a movie size in pixels or a percentage of a Web browser window. (Percents work for me!)
  5. Publish Settings HTML If you choose the Pause at Start option, the movie won't start until the user clicks a button in the movie or other area you specify. You may also choose to loop your movie or not, right below the above option.
  6. You may choose to have a right-click short-cut Display menu on or turned off.
  7. You may choose to substitute fonts in your movie that are not installed on a user's computer with anti-aliased, or smooth-edged, Device fonts.
  8. You may choose the output quality of the movie as well, but you should choose best orat least high.
  9. You may choose which alignment your movie uses, from the default center option to along the left, right, top or bottom of a Web browser window.
  10. After you have made all the display choices, click Publish to publish your movie with the settings you selected.
  11. Click Ok to confirm your changes.

Flash MX 2004 publishes the movie and creates the Web page that will display the movie; Flash MX 2004 will also place all the files in the same location that stores the current Flash MX 2004 document.
